Conversation Circle (Mabelle Arts)
My Role: Arts Facilitator
Conversation Circle was a multi-week community arts language learning program. By blending the structure of an English conversation circle with the fluidity of mixed-media art, this project provided newcomers and community members with a relaxed, supportive space to expand their vocabulary and practice their English.Â
The program moved beyond traditional "lessons," instead using the creative process as a catalyst for communication. Each session followed a unique theme, from food, photography and music to visual collage, allowing participants to learn language through art-making.
Meditation & Grounding: Every workshop began with a guided meditation, helping participants clear their minds and enter a "zone" of focused, calm learning.
Theme-Based Learning: We explored specific art forms to build specific vocabularies. In our photography sessions, we captured images in Mabelle Park to discuss perspective and place. In our music workshops, we sang together to find the rhythm of new words.
Vision Board: Through collage-making, participants created vision boards, using their new vocabulary to explain their dreams and identities to the group.
Theme: Music
The sessions were a cozy, informal environment where the structure came from the creative activity itself. This "low-stakes" atmosphere allowed participants to experiment with English without the fear of making mistakes.
Theme: Photography
While participants took home the physical art they created, the true output of the project was personal growth.
Increased Confidence: Participants reported a significant boost in their speaking confidence.
Community Connection: The program turned neighbors into friends, using art to bridge the gap between different cultures and languages.
Practical Fluency: By the end of the series, participants were more comfortable navigating daily conversations and expressing complex ideas through English.
